Cornwall Junior Girls
Cornwall has a large and very successful cricket programme, designed specifically for girls. All our Junior Girls train on Thursdays at Melville Park, followed by our Senior Women’s teams. Matches are played on Saturday mornings.
Season Dates:
Cricket is played Term 4 and Term 1, with a break during Summer School holidays.
Training begins: first Thursday of Term 4
First game: Saturday 2 November
Holiday and term time programmes are also available from Term 2.
Grades and Format:
Age Eligibility: age at 1 April this year (i.e. for 24/25 season, it is age at 1 April 2024).
Age dispensations may be granted by request.
U9s Girls (Years 3-4):
- Ideal beginner grade for girls,
- Teams: 6 aside, matches are T12 (12 overs),
- Soft cricket ball is used, so no protective equipment is needed,
- Training: Thursdays, 4-5pm at Melville Park,
- Games: Saturdays, 8-9.15am at Melville Park,
- Uniforms: Cornwall cap and shirt, white shorts,
- Equipment: cricket bat (provided in team gear bags or b.y.o.) Girls in Year 1 or 2 play mixed (boys and girls) Midget cricket, or, should they prefer are welcome to play Girls U9s grade.
U11s Girls (Years 5-6): choice of softball or hardball formats
Softball format:
- Ideal beginner grade for girls,
- Teams are 6 aside, matches are T12 (12 overs),
- Soft cricket ball is used, so no protective equipment is needed,
- Training: Thursdays, usually 4-5pm, Melville Park,
- Games: Saturdays, 8-9.15am, Melville Park,
- Uniforms: Cornwall cap and shirt, white shorts,
- Equipment: cricket bat (provided in team gear bags or b.y.o.)
Hardball format:
- Ideal grade for girls with a couple of seasons experience,
- Teams are 8 aside, matches are T20 (20 overs),
- Composite cricket ball (a softer version of a Hardball cricket ball) is used, protective equipment is worn (most of this is provided via team gear bag),
- Training: Thursdays, 1 hour between 4 and 6pm, Melville Park,
- Games: Saturdays, 8.30-11 at assorted venues around Auckland,
- Uniforms: Cornwall cap and shirt, white or green trousers,
- Equipment: girls need to provide their own helmets, other equipment can be provided via the team gear bag (batting pads, batting gloves, keeping pads, keeping gloves, bats).
U13s Girls (Years 7-8):
- Teams are 8 aside, matches are T20 (20 overs),
- Hard cricket ball is used, protective equipment is worn (most of this can be provided via team gear bag),
- Training: Thursdays, 1 hour between 4 and 6pm, Melville Park,
- Games: Saturdays, 8.30-11 at assorted venues around Auckland,
- Uniforms: Cornwall cap and shirt, white or green trousers,
- Equipment: girls need to provide their own helmets, other equipment can be provided via the team gear bag (batting pads, batting gloves, keeping pads, keeping gloves, bats).
U16s Girls (Years 9-11):
- Teams are 9 aside, matches are T20 (20 overs),
- Hard cricket ball is used, protective equipment is worn (most of this can be provide via team gear bag),
- Training: Thursdays, 1 hour between 4 and 6pm, Melville Park,
- Games: Saturdays, 9.30-12, usually at Waikaraka Park on grass pitches,
- Uniforms: Cornwall cap and shirt, white or green trousers,
- Equipment: girls need to provide their own helmets, other equipment can be
provided via the team gear bag (batting pads, batting gloves, keeping pads, keeping
gloves, bats). When playing on grass pitches, girls often like to wear sports shoes
with sprigs specific for grass.
Senior Women’s Premier Reserve:
- Senior Women’s Cricket, usually played by girls of secondary school age.
- Junior Girls interested in playing Senior Women’s cricket IN ADDITION to their morning game, please let your Junior Convenor know.
- Games: Saturday afternoons at assorted venues round Auckland.
- Format: either T20 or limited overs.
